5 LinkedIn Tips - Make Your LinkedIn Profile Work for You - Sterling Career Concepts
5 LinkedIn Tips - Make Your LinkedIn Profile Work for You 5 LinkedIn Tips Make Your LinkedIn Profile Work for You Everyone is saying that a LinkedIn profile is a âmustâ nowadays, but what does that really mean? You set up your profile, but youâre not sure if youâve done enough or if you included the right keywords. Common knowledge these days is that recruiters and hiring agents are keyword searching LinkedIn profiles for candidates. Here are five suggestions to be sure your LinkedIn profile is working for you, not against you: 1. If youâre in a job search or open to opportunities, you need to not only be found on LinkedIn, but be found there with a complete profile. Signing up two years ago, adding your most recent job, and accepting five connections gives a sloppy, outdated presentation and the impression that youâre out of touch. Round out your profile and aim for at least 50 contacts. 2. The litmus test for LinkedIn success is three-pronged: a professional LinkedIn picture, a strong headline, and a fleshed out summary section. Head and shoulders picture should be in professional attire with no distracting background images. 3. Claim your vanity url to help you share your link. That way, when you email it so anyone, it will look like this: http://www.linkedin.com/in/laurieberenson rather than something like this: http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=3394889016 4. Your LinkedIn profile will rank highly when your name is searched. What will recruiters or industry contacts find if they click on it? This is your chance to control your online presence. Donât be caught incomplete or outdated. Take the opportunity to write a strong headline. Your headline follows your name and picture throughout the site, whenever you are listed as someoneâs contact. This is prime real estate and a great spot to include a marketing tagline rather than just âVice President of Salesâ or âDirector of Business Development.â 5. Copying and pasting your entire resume is not an effective shortcut. It will lead to a disaster! Pasting your entire resume will overwhelm your profile. LinkedIn profiles are written and formatted differently than your resume. Shorter paragraphs, tighter phrases and sentences. First person is acceptable in LinkedIn, but never on a resume. Mistakes to Avoid When Creating Your Personal Brand
Mistakes to Avoid When Creating Your Personal Brand If youâre trying to make a name for yourself in any industry, spending a significant time focusing on your c-level personal branding is critical. It can take years to build your personal brand to the level you want it to be at, but avoiding some common mistakes along the way can help accelerate the process and prevent it from having the opposite impact. Youâre going to spend a lot of time shaping your brand anyway, so you might as well do it right the first time. Here are a few of the most common mistakes executives make when creating their personal brand. Being Fake People can see right through a person when they arenât authentic. You can optimize your LinkedIn profile to make yourself sound like an expert at everything, but that will only get you so far. You have to be able to back up everything you say on your profile when you make connections in person. Not only will being fake limit your opportunities, but it could cause permanent damage to your c-level personal branding efforts. Not Making Your Message Clear In order to make your message clear, you have to know what youâre trying to say. The presentation of your appearance and overall demeanor either online or in-person must match. So when you optimize your LinkedIn profile, make sure your profile picture is a professional headshot rather than a more casual photo. Complete alignment with your overall message is critical to create the strongest personal brand. Not Targeting Your Audience It doesnât do your brand or company a lot of good if you donât know whom to market your brand to. When it comes to personal branding for senior level managers, you have to be able to connect with your audience in order to make a name for yourself or your company. When your audience can make a personal connection with you, then youâll be able to effectively cater your brand toward them. Only Focusing on Certain Aspects of Your Brand An overlooked aspect of c-level personal branding is not aligning your business brand with your personal brand. If people donât agree with your personal brand, then your business brand will take a significant hit. The best way to earn and keep business today is through trust, and if a consumerâs trust wavers, then your brand will not be very strong. Professional Resume Services is here to help executives not only craft the perfect resume, but also develop their c-level personal branding. There are many reasons why you may find your job security at risk, and notlage all of them have to do with you being a bad employee. Sometimes moves are being made behind the scenes that you may not even be aware of.Whatever the reason, the sooner you realize that somethings up, the more time you have to prepare for your next journey. If you think your job security may be at risk, compare your situation against the following list of warning signs.1. Your boss has been short with you.Subtle personality changes can be extremely informative. Everyone experiences off days now and then, but pay attention if you notice a string of off days coming from your boss where youre concerned. If you once enjoyed a friendly relationship with your supervisor but have noticed them growing increasingly distant, this may be a red flag.2. Youve been demoted.Ha ving jobs taken away is seldom a good thing. You may have cause for concern if youve noticed that your responsibilities have been significantly cutparticularly if that has included an official title change in the opposite direction.3. Others around you are being terminated.Sometimes people lose their jobs through no fault of their own. When your department starts shrinking, it may be time to start getting your ducks in a row. Budget cuts or restrukturierung for other members of your team could be a sign that your role is in jeopardy as well.4. You arent being given new assignments. After working at place for a while, you become familiar with the ebb and flow of your workload. When you start to notice that times that were once busy for you are now stagnant, you should be on high alert. Your manager may be reallocating your duties to others in the wake of your impending absence.5. Youve received multiple negative performance reviews. One bad review shouldnt necessarily set of the alarm bells, but if youve received two or more consecutively, it may be time to worry. When youve been solely responsible for tasks for a while and now youre being asked to share your knowledge, this may be a bad sign. Maybe youve noticed coworkers who once showed little interest in how you complete tasks asking questions about your processes or your boss has directly asked you to train someone. 7. Youre being excluded from meetings.Finding yourself not invited to meetings after youve typically been asked to attend is a major signal. This may be especially significant if you notice people in your department or who share your grade are being invited while youre excludedespecially if they typically werent invited in the past. Being shut out never feels good, and sometimes it can be extremely telling. Is your job security at risk? Remember theres no point in panicking.
